The leaked clip

Oooh shit.

Here we go!  Finally it’s not deleted or anything. B:

Okay, I have to admit it, this is super-cute… though it kind of ramps my LoK concerns even higher. If the character growth focus is going to be on Korra’s spiritual development… given what Bryke presented as positive spiritual philosophy in TLA… um.

I want to hear all of your LoK concerns.  Srsly.  Tell me.

…you’re going to be sorry about this, but okay.

First, the way the third season of TLA went caused me to lose a lot of faith in Bryke’s ability to put together a worthwhile narrative. I am extremely dissatisfied with the finale of the show, and I’m not just speaking as a Zutara ‘shipper. (I only started watching the show about six months ago, so I knew going in that I was on the sunken ‘ship. There was no disappointment in that regard.) What had been set up as a very nuanced story took a major gearshift third season, and all of the opportunities for analysis of how one views war were tossed aside in favor of a Right Or Wrong mentality. If that’s what the show wanted for TLA, what are they planning for LoK?

This is particularly where my concerns with regards to Korra’s spiritual journey come in. Aang’s final decisions during Sozin’s Comet were presented in the show as good and wise. If that’s what the writers consider good and wise, I’m terrified of what they’ll say Korra should believe.

The next big thing is how much I hate — and I mean hate — Republic City. It’s been, what, eighty years since the end of TLA? We’re supposed to believe a feudal world changed into a twentieth-century one in that period of time? Yes, okay, that happened in real life — but that was because the West opened Asia. Asia didn’t leapfrog a thousand years of cultural development on its own. Western culture shoved its way in. The idea that the Avatar world would just create a place like Republic City in a mere eighty years… no. Just no. I’m sure it can be explained through forcible fanwanking, but no matter how good the wank is, it’ll still be too hard to buy.

A corollary to that is that I liked the feudal set up of TLA. I’m not interested in twentieth century cities.

The next part is that, from what we’re hearing, it sounds like there will be an element of Makorra. That bothers me, especially considering the physical similarities between those characters and Katara and Zuko. Maybe they’ll work together fabulously; maybe the rumors are wrong and there won’t be any ‘shipping at all. But the feel I get off of it is a, “Here, you whiny Zutara people, here’s your Water/Fire pairing, now quit your bitching.” Like Makorra and Zutara will be interchangeable.

LoK will also require me to accept a future for the TLA canon pairings. I can get over the Zutara loss, but I just. don’t. like. Kataang. and I don’t like having to accept that history for the two of them. But it’s not just that — something in me really, really grates at the idea of Toph having a kid. I just don’t see her with children. Anyway, individual character interpretations are obviously subjective, but I don’t like having those taken away from me.

And, last but not least, I hate it when my carefully constructed headcanons are collapsed by new information. There’s a reason I generally don’t write for unfinished book series or television shows, because I throw melodramatic snit fits when my backstory collapses. I’m not looking forward to that.

So. Yeah. I hope that LoK is so awesome that in a year I’ll have totally forgotten about all these worries. I want it to be good. But… yeah. Concerns.

^——- Single-handedly explains all of my concerns for Legend of Korra. (Seriously, Audrey—it’s like you’re in my head o_O)

As excited as I am for something new—that has a lot of potential—I can’t help cringing in fear a little given what has come before. I’m really glad I’m not the only one that feels this way. Maybe it’s an age thing?

I went through and bolded my biggest complaint about LoK. I hate, hate, hate, HATE the fact that it seems so modern. I LOVED the Avatar world the way it was. I understand that eighty or so years have passed and it’s going to be different than it was in the original series, but it’s SO different from what I’ve seen that it seems like it’s not even the same place anymore. And the fact that they advanced that much in so little time just… isn’t very believable. I don’t know. I want to keep an open mind about LoK, but I think the modern aspect is going to kill it for me. :/
